Last week a really smart friend and I disagreed about the merits of a piece of packaging. She said, “Yeah, well design is always subjective.” She didn’t mean to start an argument about design, but I took it to heart anyway.
My point (not particularly well made in the discussion) was that good design is a matter of getting a lot of things right: the strategy, the look, the emotional connection, the functionality, the creativity and originality, etc. Smart people often disagree if a particular design is successful or not, but that doesn’t mean that good design is just in the eye of the beholder. Right?
