Kristin is what you’d call a Renaissance woman. Her team relies on her for a number of things, including building desks, carving pumpkins, and as their resident baker. She’s also the first to jump in and figure out how to do something her team has never done before...all with a wicked sense of humor. And don’t even think of tapping anyone else to kick off karaoke night. She always has a mean rendition of Ice Ice Baby at the ready.
Meet Kristin James, Director of Strategy at our New York office.
1. Are you originally from New York?
Nope. I was born and raised in Texas, y’all, in a small suburb outside of Dallas y’all, not far from where Ross Perot kept his longhorns and Southfork Ranch. Because…Texas…y’all.
2. Before working here, what was the most unusual or interesting job you’ve ever had?
I took an adult gap year to be a Cheesemonger at Murray’s in the West Village. If you ever need a wheel of cheese broken down to 4-ounce wedges and wrapped professionally while engaging in “food theatre,” I’m your gal.
3. What kinds of hobbies and interests do you have outside of work?
My husband and I go in deep with food projects so we always have something we’re canning, pickling, curing, fermenting and inventing, especially cocktail recipes. As a lifelong lover of ballet and in constant search for exercise that I actually want to be doing, I’m an avid Barre3 person—to a cult-like degree. I annoy Instagram and Facebook people every time I go into the studio, but when you can revele with the best of them some bragging is in order (by best of them I mean my classmates, not like, Baryshnikov). There’s also a lot of hiking and travelling in my life. Usually together. We need vacations to rest after our vacations.
4. What is one thing you couldn’t live without?
My family. Oh, air actually. And water. This question is flawed. No wonder Maslow needed an entire hierarchy. Wait, sarcasm. Final answer.
5. What is your hidden talent?
Whatever the equivalent of a photographic memory is in terms of SNL skits, I have that. And I can play the theme to Jurassic Park on my ukulele.
6. What is your biggest pet peeve?
People who feel the need to post something on social media every time the go to the gym, yoga, spinning, etc.
7. What is something most people would be surprised to know about you?
I cry at pretty much anything, which is why I’m the last person you want making a toast at your wedding. But I am especially emotional when the Dillon Panthers dig deep and rally in their never-ending road to State.
8. Name 3 things on your bucket list:
- Northern Lights
- Win an Oscar
- Really want to hug a penguin
9. What is one of your personal mottos or favorite sayings?
“You can’t fight crazy with logic.”
10. Name a favorite line from a movie.
“Gentlemen to bed! For we leave at 9:30. Ish.” - Steve Coogan on The Trip
11. What is your favorite part of your job? What makes you excited to come into the office every day?
My teammates are fun and funny, in addition to being kick-ass smart, passionate people. Together, we try to defy creative gravity, all while singing along to some amazing tunes and celebrating with a bourbon here and there. Our office dog, Gray, isn’t so hard on the eyes either. It’s nice work if you can get it.
