27 people. 324 bottles. 2 days.
With day #1 of our office juice cleanse behind us, there were mixed emotions over how it went. Nearly all of us started out the day thoroughly energized. But, it wasn’t without a bit of a shock and awe on some of our bodies. No doubt I’m not the only one who typically considers "getting my greens" refers to that pile of lettuce and sprinkling of raw veggies that sits unceremoniously beneath my creamy blue cheese dressing. But we all started out day #1 with smiles on our faces and pep in our step as we passed our fellow juicers in the hallway with a knowing nod of the head or an “air cheers” with our bottles.
I must admit I was feeling pretty proud of myself for getting through the day without any solid food (I opted for straight juice)…until about 3pm when the caffeine withdrawals hit. But as the saying goes, "what doesn’t kill you makes you stronger." So, a little green around the gills (similar color to what I was drinking), I battled the headache nausea and powered through. By afternoon, our smiles waned just a bit and our “air cheers” were replaced with brief exchanges about how we were feeling: “I have a headache;” “Green is no longer my favorite color;” “Who the hell is having Thai food for lunch;” “God that smells good;” “I’m not hungry, but think I may float away from all the liquids;” “I’ve got more energy than usual;” etc.
By the end of the day, I checked back in with my co-workers to get their overall thoughts of their progress and here’s what some of them had to say:
“While I was brushing my teeth last night, the thought of having a vegetable drink the next day about made me gag. Today, I feel normal and fine. I didn't wake up hungry or feeling deprived. My first drink didn't give me the gag reflex, so I think I will be fine today.”
“I did fine with the juice in the morning, but had to have a handful of almonds in addition for lunch. I felt good all day. Couldn't help myself, had to have salmon and a salad for dinner along with the juice. All in all, I am very happy with the juice. Now let's see if I can survive day 2!”
“I started out thinking, ‘I ONLY get 6 juices a day?’ But by last night I was thinking, ‘Do I REALLY have to drink more than 4?’ I did have a glass of almond milk instead of the last 2 bottles of juice to get in some protein."
“I’ll never take food for granted again….”
“I started the Juice Ritual a ½ day early, so my first ‘uh oh’ moment was at dinner that first night. However, it does get easier with managing the cravings and hunger pains. They essentially go away. Now, I’m bracing myself for getting in all six bottles per day. Bottoms up people!”
“My 6 year old said to me ‘Daddy, why are you doing this? It seems mean to just have to drink juice.’ And I didn’t really have an answer for him."
“I had a bit of a headache in the early afternoon, but once I had my 3rd juice I was good to go for the rest of the day. My energy was great in the evening and I actually got tons accomplished! I can tell my body is happy with me that I am putting all these fruits and veggies into it.”
Now that the initial shock has passed, most of us seem to be settling into a routine now, especially after figuring out what is working best for our individual bodies. What’s most important is that we are all still committed and onboard with this cleanse. And after all, if we can do this for our bodies for 3 days then we’re off to a good start with putting our health first for the rest of the year…or at least until the first batch of holiday cookies is pulled from the oven come December. Mmmmm, cookies….
