As a native Londoner there are few things that say Christmas to me quite as much as the Oxford Street lights. I have such fond memories as a little girl of dressing up in all my warm clothes (mittens, leg warmers, ear muffs and other 80s essentials) and going with my parents to see the lights. It's one of those things that is so special as a child that it still evokes that child-like excitement and wonder in me.
So this year when our clients at Unilever invited us to watch the switch-on live on Oxford Street you can imagine the excitement. In a fantastic piece of seasonal marketing the lights this year are sponsored by Marmite Gold, the latest limited edition Marmite that we have designed for Unilever.
Coming out of the tube at Oxford Circus the first thing I saw was our Marmite Gold jar design up there in lights. Along the rest of the street there are banners that play on the Marmite 'Love it or Hate it' brand message with elves fighting over a bit of toast, Father Christmas spitting his bite of Marmite out, a fairy flying off with her bit of toast and even a banner where shoppers can upload their faces and see themselves above one of the world's most famous shopping streets. The twinkling lights have been used to get across the idea that this special product has edible gold coloured flecks for very special sparkly toast this Christmas!
In a launch event hosted by Jamie Theakston and Emma Bunton (Baby Spice!) and with guest appearances by Lawson and Leona Lewis, the climax was the switching on of the lights by Robbie Williams. With the magic of the Christmas lights and the necessary screaming for this legend of my teenage years this was definitely a nostalgic start to Christmas 2012!
