It is summer already and that means WAYZGOOSE time! A team of us from Hornall Anderson competed in the 2014 School of Visual Concepts Wayzgoose. A Wayzgoose is basically a big celebration of the art of letterpress. The school usually hosts the function every year on its campus but this year the event was a part of the South Lake Union Block Party. This year’s event had a bunch of awesome booths featuring art, prints, goods, and letterpress supplies from various letterpress companies from around the area. And the main attraction of the Wazygoose is of course the Steamroller Smackdown!
The smackdown involves about 10-12 design firms from the Seattle/ Portland area. We were all given a theme and had to create a giant poster in that theme, then cut it out of linoleum and then we are given an hour to print the poster at the event by way of a steamroller.
This year’s theme was to capture the vibe or culture of the South Lake Union Neighborhood. The prints are ginormous in size- 3ft x 4ft so it takes an entire team of people to cut the linoleum, ink it up and get the paper oriented on it. It’s always a daunting task but so much fun! Here are some pictures from the event
It was SUPER hot with zero wind and cloud cover, but we sweated through the afternoon to turn out about 6 six of our giant posters! Even though we didn’t win the prize for best poster (we apparently came close) but had a great time participating.
